Abstract

Pleural tuberculosis is a disease with low incidence in the pediatric population, unlike pulmonary tuberculosis, which, according to statistics from the Centers for Disease Control, accounts for 79% of all reported cases (1). However, it should be the primary diagnostic suspicion in cases of iso-lated, non-toxic pleural effusion. This report presents the case of an adolescent, previously healthy and without exposure to pulmonary tuberculosis, who experienced a torpid progression of the disease. Through a comprehensive analysis of complementary tests, clinical presentation, and epidemiological context, timely anti-tuberculosis treatment was initiated. The pleural biopsy ultimately confirmed tuberculosis. The objective of this report is to emphasize the importance of clinical evaluation, especially in a country where tuberculosis is considered an endemic disease.
