In Ecuador according to the INEC (National Institute of Statistics and Census), the incidence of preterm newborns in 2017 was 7.11%. Objective: To determine the conditioning factors of preterm birth. Materials: Retrospective analytical study of unpaired cases and controls. Data obtained through the registry of deliveries and cesarean. These data were processed in IBM SPSS
Statistics version 25. In addition, the Chi-square interdependence test (Χ²) and Student’s t-test were applied considering significant association with a value of p<0.05. Results: Of 151 cases of preterm newborns and 277 controls, sta- tistical significance was found in the following variables: age ≥ 35 years OR 0.621 CI 95% (0.575- .0670) Χ² 17.586 and p value of 0.000027, number of
prenatal controls ≥6, OR 0.439 CI 95% (0.286-0. 675) Χ² 14.431 and p value of 0.0001, presence of maternal pathologies related to the pregnant OR 1.646 95% CI (1.072-2.529) Χ² 5.227 and the presence of multifactorial etiology ≥3 risk factors p value of 0.022 and OR 1.825 95% CI (1.200 -2.777) Χ² 8.000 and p
value of 0.005. Conclusions: It was concluded that pregnant women with the presence of 3 or more previously mentioned risk factors present a 1.8 times higher probability of preterm delivery.
