Abstract

The endotracheal tube airway sealing pressures do not always match international recommendations; overinflation is common, causing damage to the tracheal mucosa, and consequently leading to postoperative symptoms. Objective: Determine the correlation between the pressure applied to the endotracheal tube cuff and laryngotracheal symptoms in the immediate postoperative period at Luis Vernaza Hospital from January to December 2022. Materials and methods: A longitudinal study was conducted on patients who underwent a surgical procedure under general anesthesia. Clinical variables and inflation pressures were collected. The data was analyzed with the SPSS ® statistical program, and descriptive and inferential reports were obtained. A p-value <0.05 was considered statistically significant. Re- sults: 324 patients were included; the mean age was 50.15 years (SD: ±17.12 years), 15.1% had low cuff pressures, 29.9% had normal pressures, and 54.9% had high pressures. Around 48.8% manifested any symptom in the postope- rative period, mainly cough (26.5%) and foreign body sensation (16.0%). The associated factors were sex (OR: 1.70; 95% CI: 1.08-2.68); the method (OR: 2.77; 95% CI: 1.68 – 4.58); tube number (OR: 0.06; 95% CI: 0.37 – 0.92); cuff pressures (OR: 5.88; 95% CI: 3.62-9.55) and intubation time (OR: 4.11; 95% CI: 1.34-12-57). Conclusion: Endotracheal tube cuff pressures and other factors

are correlated with postoperative symptomatology.
